Here is our video showing how we designed our Mean Green House.

Our House

Our Mean Green Eco House

First Mr Hudson gave us some information to study. It was two pages about passive design. We had to highlight the parts we thought would be good in an eco house. We meet as a group and brainstormed our ideas including any prior knowledge we had about sustainability.
Sandy Beth-Croft, an Environmental Sustainability Advisor, who works for Hutt City Council came and talked with us. She talked about the sun and which way the house should go to get the sun. She gave us great ideas about how to do our house. It was great meeting her.

We had homework during the holidays. We had to talk to five people about our project and ask them if they had any ideas or knowledge about eco housing. We took notes in our scrap books if they gave us any useful information.
After the holidays Mr Hudson wrote down websites to help us with our investigation and we spent school time and time at home browsing the websites for useful information.
After researching we had a go at building. Some of us worked on our own and some of us worked in pairs. This was a chance to experiment with materials and learn a bit about scale. We found lots of useful things in the school resource room.
Anatia was the next person to help us. She is a parent at our school and is also on the Board of Trustees. She supervised us and talked with us about combining our ideas when making our final model. The shape for the house was taken from Kate and Tessa’s practice model but the ideas about the inside of the house and the materials that should be used were from everybody in the group. We had to draw plans and measurements for our scale model. We had to do more research using books Anatia had taken out from the library.

These are books we used during our research (books provided by Anatia):
  • New Natural Heat by Dominic Bradbury and Richard Powers
  • 150 Best Eco House Ideas by Marta Serrats
  • Building Green By Clarke Snell and Tim Callahan
